Cuiaba (west-central Brazil) has become quite a large city, with the population approaching 400,000.  The SIL Center used to be outside the city, but the city has now grown out to it.  The last few blocks to the Center are still dirt roads.  The Center has an aircraft hanger and airstrip, so the JAARS pilots can fly directly from the Center out to the villages.

Above, Judy is reviewing the aviation inventory.  The SIL plane in the background is being prepped to fly out to the village.  Below, the plane, fully loaded with passengers - families who had medical needs - preparing to depart back to the village.

We were in Brazil during the dry season - hot, brown, and dusty!  But the Chapadas was still quite impressive.

In Porto Velho (northwest Brazil), the Center is still a good ways outside the city, with a long (rough & very bumpy) dirt road to match.  Literally cut out of the jungle, it's a beautiful location.

Here's the house that we stayed in on the Porto Velho Center.  Check out the open roof structure to the ceiling and walls!

The inside is all beautiful hardwood!  Plus, it was wonderful waking up in the morning to the sounds of the jungle (monkeys, birds, insects).

Debbie taught a class to the managers covering financial management of their departments.

This photo does not do justice to this majestic tree for its height and beauty!  (Note the "baggage" carried by Judy and Debbie.  Auditors always seem to be accompanied by lots of paperwork!)
